How to revise A-level Maths

Effective Maths revision combines retrieval, written problem solving, mixed practice and review of errors. Use your awarding organisation’s current specification and past papers to check the content and paper structure for your qualification.

Start questions without a model answer

Read or review a method, then attempt questions from a blank page. Write enough working to identify where an error occurred. Compare your solution with the worked answer only after completing the attempt.

Move from topic practice to mixed practice

Topic sets build fluency with a method. Mixed sets also require you to identify which method applies. Once a topic is secure, combine it with questions from other units and include unfamiliar contexts.

Revisit material over time

Short, regular sessions allow repeated retrieval. Schedule definitions, exact values, standard results and previously incorrect questions across several days or weeks rather than completing all practice in one sitting.

Check the formula booklet for your qualification

Learn the results that your formula booklet does not provide, together with their conditions. InkMaths labels results against the Pearson Edexcel booklet; AQA and OCR candidates should check the booklet supplied for their own qualification.

Analyse errors precisely

Record whether an error came from algebra, notation, a missing condition, method selection, calculator use or interpretation. Correct the first incorrect line and practise another question that tests the same skill.

Practise proof and written conclusions

State assumptions, give a connected argument and finish with the required conclusion. In Statistics and Mechanics, define symbols, state the model or hypotheses where required, and write conclusions in context.

Check restrictions and solutions

Check intervals, domains, units, calculator mode and whether an algebraic operation may have introduced or removed a solution. Substitute solutions into the original equation where practical.

Use official past papers

Use topic questions while learning and official papers for complete exam practice. Follow the published duration for your paper, mark it with the official scheme and use examiner reports to identify qualification-specific expectations.
