Cambridge International 9702 Paper 5: Planning, Analysis and Evaluation

Questions on the practical skills of planning, analysis and evaluation. The context of the questions may be outside the syllabus content.

9702/5 · 1 hour 15 minutes · 30 marks · 11.5% of the A-level. Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics 9702, Syllabus for 2028, 2029 and 2030, Version 1, published September 2025; for examination from 2028, printed page 11, retrieved 21 August 2026 (https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/Images/744626-2028-2030-syllabus.pdf)

What is on it

A Level only, and a timetabled written paper: “This examination will not require laboratory facilities.” “Paper 5 will consist of two questions each of 15 marks.” Question 1 is the planning question: you design an experimental investigation of a given problem, and the question is not highly structured.

The 2025 to 2027 summary panel says candidates answer two compulsory questions, and the 2028 to 2030 panel drops that sentence. The rule is unchanged: the body of both editions says Paper 5 consists of two questions each of 15 marks.

No content unit maps to this paper either, and Paper 5 gets no printed data or formulas page. The practical guides and the maths bridge are the material for it.
