Coordinate geometry formulae

The 3 results the coordinate geometry notes display, each with the conditions it needs to be true and a link to the lesson that states it. The formulae booklet prints none of them, so every one is yours to carry into the examination in your head.

Years 12-13 · 2 lessons with formulae.

A result the Edexcel formulae booklet prints is marked as such; one it does not print is marked to learn; and a result badged derived in the lesson is a working line the notes build in front of you rather than a standard result to memorise.

Straight lines

y−y1=m(x−x1)y − y_{1} = m(x − x_{1})NOT IN THE BOOKLET: LEARN ITConditionsThe line is not vertical. A vertical line has no gradient m; write x = x₁ instead.
m1m2=−1m_{1} m_{2} = −1NOT IN THE BOOKLET: LEARN ITConditionsBoth lines have a gradient, so neither is vertical. A vertical and a horizontal line are perpendicular without satisfying this.

Circles

(x−a)2+(y−b)2=r2(x − a)^{2} + (y − b)^{2} = r^{2}NOT IN THE BOOKLET: LEARN ITConditionsr > 0, with centre (a, b).

Every formula in the library is indexed by unit on the equation index, and the coordinate geometry notes are where these results are derived and used. The 3 the booklet does not print are on the list of every formula to memorise, alongside the rest of the course.
