Further Statistics 2: lesson checks, part 1 flashcards
This deck has 6 check-yourself questions and 6 spot-the-error cards. The misconception each lesson corrects, and its check-yourself question with the worked answer. Rate each answer, and the card comes back sooner or later depending on how you rated it.

How the five kinds differ
Standard results ask you to recall a formula or a value. Definitions ask you to state a mathematical term precisely. Recall prompts ask for a rule, condition or method. Check yourself cards are a short question with its answer. Spot the error cards ask you to correct a statement that is wrong.

- The least squares line is the one that passes closest to all the points, measuring distance perpendicular to the line.Spot the error
- A regression line gives Sxx = 20, Sxy = 30 and Syy = 50. Find the gradient and the residual sum of squares.Check
- For a continuous random variable, P(X = 1.5) is the height of the density at 1.5.Spot the error
- f(x) = kx for 0 ≤ x ≤ 4 and zero elsewhere. Find k and F(x) on the interval.Check
- The mode of a continuous distribution is the value that occurs most often.Spot the error
- For f(x) = 1/4 on 0 ≤ x ≤ 4, find E(X) and E(X²).Check
- The variance of the uniform distribution on a to b is (b − a)²/4, since the range is b − a.Spot the error
- X follows U(0, 10). Find P(X > 6.5) and the standard deviation.Check
- A correlation coefficient near zero means the two variables are unrelated.Spot the error
- Six items are ranked by two people. The rank differences are 1, −1, 0, 2, −1, −1. Find Spearman's coefficient.Check
- A sample correlation of 0.5 is moderately strong, so it is significant evidence of a real relationship.Spot the error
- A sample of 20 pairs gives r = 0.35. The 5% one-tailed critical value is 0.3783. What do you conclude?Check
