Further Statistics 2: lesson checks, part 2 flashcards
This deck has 6 check-yourself questions and 5 spot-the-error cards. The misconception each lesson corrects, and its check-yourself question with the worked answer. Rate each answer, and the card comes back sooner or later depending on how you rated it.

How the five kinds differ
Standard results ask you to recall a formula or a value. Definitions ask you to state a mathematical term precisely. Recall prompts ask for a rule, condition or method. Check yourself cards are a short question with its answer. Spot the error cards ask you to correct a statement that is wrong.

- For independent X and Y, the variance of X − Y is Var(X) − Var(Y).Spot the error
- X is N(30, 9) and Y is N(10, 16), independently. State the distribution of 2X − 3Y.Check
- A sample of 100 from a population with σ = 20 has mean 55. Find a 95% confidence interval for μ.Check
- To compare two sample means, subtract their standard errors to get the standard error of the difference.Spot the error
- Two independent samples of size 25 have means 80 and 74, from populations with variances 50 and 30. Find the standard error of the difference.Check
- A chi-squared test for a variance uses a symmetric critical region, half the level in each tail.Spot the error
- A sample of 16 from a normal population gives s² = 20. State the test statistic for H₀: σ² = 15 and its degrees of freedom.Check
- With a sample of 12 you should use z = 1.96 for a 95% interval, since the sample mean is normal.Spot the error
- A sample of 9 has mean 51 and s = 6. Find the test statistic for H₀: μ = 48 and state the degrees of freedom.Check
- A large value of the Wilcoxon statistic T is the evidence against H₀, since a large test statistic means a large departure.Spot the error
- Nine paired differences have their sizes ranked 1 to 9, and the negative differences sit at ranks 2 and 5. Find T+ and T−, and say which is used in a two-tailed test.Check
