Further Mechanics 1: lesson checks flashcards
This deck has 8 check-yourself questions and 7 spot-the-error cards. The misconception each lesson corrects, and its check-yourself question with the worked answer. Rate each answer, and the card comes back sooner or later depending on how you rated it.

How the five kinds differ
Standard results ask you to recall a formula or a value. Definitions ask you to state a mathematical term precisely. Recall prompts ask for a rule, condition or method. Check yourself cards are a short question with its answer. Spot the error cards ask you to correct a statement that is wrong.

- A particle of mass 3 kg moving at 5 m s⁻¹ collides with a stationary particle of mass 2 kg and they move off together. Find their common speed.Check
- The magnitude of the impulse is the mass times the change in the speed of the particle.Spot the error
- A particle of mass 2 kg has velocity (5i − j) m s⁻¹. An impulse changes it to (i + 3j) m s⁻¹. Find the impulse.Check
- The work done by a force of 20 N moving an object 5 m is always 100 J.Spot the error
- A force of 30 N acts at 60° to the direction of motion while an object moves 8 m. Find the work done.Check
- Two strings of the same material with the same modulus give the same tension at the same extension.Spot the error
- An elastic spring of natural length 0.8 m has modulus 40 N. Find the thrust when it is compressed to a length of 0.6 m.Check
- The elastic energy stored is the tension times the extension.Spot the error
- An elastic string of natural length 2 m and modulus 49 N is stretched by 0.5 m. Find the energy stored.Check
- Since momentum is conserved in a collision, energy is conserved too.Spot the error
- Two spheres approach each other at a combined 8 m s⁻¹ and separate at 3 m s⁻¹. Find the coefficient of restitution.Check
- When a ball bounces off the floor, momentum is conserved, so its speed is unchanged.Spot the error
- A ball strikes a floor at 7 m s⁻¹ and rebounds at 4.2 m s⁻¹. Find e, and the height it reaches, taking g = 9.8 m s⁻².Check
- In an oblique impact with a smooth wall, the ball leaves at the same angle to the wall as it arrived, like light in a mirror.Spot the error
- A ball hits a smooth floor at 8 m s⁻¹ at 30° to the floor with e = 0.5. Find the two components after impact.Check
