Further Mechanics 2: lesson checks flashcards
This deck has 10 check-yourself questions and 9 spot-the-error cards. The misconception each lesson corrects, and its check-yourself question with the worked answer. Rate each answer, and the card comes back sooner or later depending on how you rated it.

How the five kinds differ
Standard results ask you to recall a formula or a value. Definitions ask you to state a mathematical term precisely. Recall prompts ask for a rule, condition or method. Check yourself cards are a short question with its answer. Spot the error cards ask you to correct a statement that is wrong.

- A particle moves in a circle of radius 2 m at 3 rad s⁻¹. Find its speed and its acceleration.Check
- To complete a vertical circle on a string, the particle only needs enough speed to reach the top.Spot the error
- A particle on a string of length 0.5 m passes the top of a vertical circle. Find the least speed it can have there, taking g = 9.8 m s⁻².Check
- The centre of mass of a set of particles is the average of their positions.Spot the error
- Masses of 1 kg, 2 kg and 3 kg sit at x = 0, 2 and 6. Find the centre of mass.Check
- A wire triangle and a triangular lamina of the same shape have the same centre of mass.Spot the error
- A uniform lamina is a 6 by 4 rectangle with a 2 by 2 square removed from one corner. Find the distance of the centre of mass from the long edge nearest the square.Check
- For a lamina under a curve, the y coordinate of the centre of mass is found by integrating y against the area, just as x is.Spot the error
- A uniform lamina lies under y = x from x = 0 to x = 3. Find xG.Check
- A body on a slope topples as soon as its centre of mass is higher than the lower edge of its base.Spot the error
- A uniform cube of side 0.6 m rests on a rough plane with μ = 0.8. Does it topple or slide as the plane is tilted?Check
- For a variable force you can use the SUVAT equations with the average value of the force.Spot the error
- A particle of mass 1 kg moves under a force F = 6x newtons, starting from rest at x = 1. Find its speed at x = 3.Check
- In simple harmonic motion the particle moves fastest at the ends of its path, where the force on it is largest.Spot the error
- A particle moves with simple harmonic motion of amplitude 2 m and ω = 3 rad s⁻¹. Find its speed at a displacement of 1 m.Check
- A mass hanging on a spring oscillates about the position where the spring has its natural length.Spot the error
- A mass of 2 kg hangs on a spring of natural length 0.5 m and modulus 100 N. Find the period of small oscillations.Check
- Acceleration is dv/dt, so any kinematics problem can be solved by integrating with respect to time.Spot the error
- A particle has acceleration 4t m s⁻² and speed 3 m s⁻¹ at t = 0. Find its speed at t = 2.Check
