Mechanics: lesson checks flashcards
This deck has 9 check-yourself questions and 6 spot-the-error cards. The misconception each lesson corrects, and its check-yourself question with the worked answer. Rate each answer, and the card comes back sooner or later depending on how you rated it.

How the five kinds differ
Standard results ask you to recall a formula or a value. Definitions ask you to state a mathematical term precisely. Recall prompts ask for a rule, condition or method. Check yourself cards are a short question with its answer. Spot the error cards ask you to correct a statement that is wrong.

- A negative velocity means the object is slowing down.Spot the error
- A load hangs from a crane by a steel cable. The cable is modelled as a light inextensible string. State what each of the two words contributes to the model.Check
- A stone is dropped from rest down a well and hits the water after 2 s. Taking g = 9.8 m s⁻², find the depth and the speed at impact.Check
- If a particle's velocity is zero at some instant, its acceleration is zero then too.Spot the error
- A particle starts from rest and has a = 12t − 6. Find v(t), and the time after t = 0 at which it is next at rest.Check
- A 1200 kg car accelerates at 2.5 m s⁻² against a total resistance of 600 N. Find the driving force.Check
- The tension on the heavy side of a pulley is larger than on the light side.Spot the error
- Masses of 7 kg and 3 kg hang over a smooth pulley. Write the two equations of motion and find the acceleration in terms of g.Check
- A projectile's horizontal speed gradually decreases during flight.Spot the error
- A stone is thrown horizontally at 15 m s⁻¹ from a 19.6 m cliff. How long does it fall, and how far from the cliff base does it land?Check
- A 4 kg box rests on a rough horizontal floor, μ = 0.5. A horizontal force of 15 N is applied. Show the box does not move, and state the friction force acting.Check
- If a particle is in equilibrium, there are no forces acting on it.Spot the error
- A particle of weight 20 N on a smooth slope inclined at 30° is held by a string parallel to the slope. Find the tension and the normal reaction.Check
- A bigger force always has a bigger turning effect.Spot the error
- A uniform 4 m plank of weight 80 N rests on a support at its centre. A child of weight 400 N sits 0.5 m from one end. How far from the centre, on the other side, must a 500 N adult sit to balance it?Check
